Takes a lot of trust, communication and muscle to move bricks like this.
Our Mexico adVanture gives us time to notice our bodies. How often do you wake up tired and achy in the morning? Runny nose and itchy eyes from allergies? Headache and sluggish brain from not drinking enough water - or drinking too much beer? (or whatever your bodily distractions might be)
With a “normal” job, most of us (perhaps begrudgingly) go to work and soon forget our bodily woes with the stimulation and activities of the office. Once we get into task-mode, allergies or fatigue fade into the background.
If you don’t have a job to go to, and work from home without colleagues - like sitting in the van’s couch typing on a laptop, or if you spend the day watering trees and caring for senior pets without strenuous or complex tasks, the runny nose and headache might stay in the front of your mind.
I notice this phenomenon often, like when I tell myself, I hardly slept last night so I can’t do a writing project today, better knit and listen to audiobooks. With external motivators or demands, I could surmount my fatigue most days.
Another obstacle to working hard - no colleagues. Yes, we have each other! But our life in El Terreno is highly delineated. I cook, Phillip “makes” our water. I write and knit, Phillip reads tech news and builds stuff. I garden, he makes swales. We are great teammates in life, but not colleagues on specific projects because we don’t understand what the other is doing. When we get stuck it’s easier to give up, because we don’t have someone else to offer new ideas.
All that’s to say, we’ll have renewed appreciation for team tasks when we return to the US. We’re not interested in “normal,” long-term jobs, since we want to stay mobile. Collective action and external expectations are welcome.
